‘Blood and water cannot flow together,’ PM says on Indus treaty

Ravi Shanker Kapoor |

Hinting at some tweaking, if not abrogation, of the India-Pakistan Indus Waters Treaty, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that “blood and water cannot flow together.” He also held a meeting of top officials from the Water Resources and External Affairs Ministries and the PMO to examine India’s options against Pakistan in the aftermath of Uri.

Any further water talks have been canceled. It has also been decided to maximize water use of rivers flowing through Jammu & Kashmir.

The talks on the Permanent Indus Commission have been postponed till “terror comes to an end.” As per the provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty, the Commission meets once a year, alternately in India and Pakistan.
