The disturbances at Kaliachak in West Bengal’s Malda district are symptomatic of gradual Islamization in the areas surrounding Bangladesh. The process is slow, like a creeping acquisition in the corporate sector, but it is steady. And it is a hostile takeover.
The very facts of the case are revealing. Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari makes certain anti-Islam remarks in UP, for which he is incarcerated (That the man is being penalized for exercising his fundamental right to freedom of expression is missed by the liberal media. The czars of public discourse say that hate speech is a crime, whereas the fact is that there is no such thing as hate speech. But that is another story. See https://thehinduchronicle.com/article-details.aspx?id=178).
A month later, hundreds of miles away, some mullahs decide to make their obnoxious presence felt; they find a convenient pretext—Tiwari’s remarks. So, on January 3, a mob, estimated anything between 50,000 and over two lakhs, attacked the police station at Kaliachak, forced the small police force to flee, and indulged in arson and vandalism. They didn’t kill anybody but then that was not the objective; the idea was to terrorize the locals, cops, the authorities, and the political class. Had they planned violence, it could have—given the size of the gathering—spiraled out of the organizers’ control. This would have forced the media to take notice of the mischief.
The Islamists completely succeeded in their endeavor: the police are trying their best to cover up the depredations of Muslim fanatics; the legal action against the culprits is minimal at best; and politicians of all hues, save those from the Bharatiya Janata Party, are trying to ingratiate themselves with the Muslims who are almost half the population in the district. And the mainstream media has turned a blind eye to the outrage.
It needs to be mentioned that this is not the first such incident in the country. In August 2012, in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan a Muslim mob got worked up—ostensibly—over the mistreatment of the Rohingyas in Myanamar. Inflammatory speeches were made, leading to rioting and assault on cops, including women constables; even a martyr’s memorial was not spared. However, a senior police officer, eager to please his political masters, ensured that the police personnel did not deal firmly with the hooligans.
Whether it is Azad Maidan or Kaliachak, one fact is indisputable: our system is prone to the depredations and machinations of Islamists. Politicians are always keen to accommodate them; other state functionaries don’t want to mess with them; police and security agencies feel constrained while dealing with criminal and anti-national activities of Muslims lest they be accused of communalism. While politicians, bureaucrats, and cops are wary of ruffling the Islamist feathers, our though leaders often facilitate the jihadist agenda. Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan, for instance, favors Islamic banking.
Then there are public intellectuals who are opposed to reason and commonsense. For decades they equated any meaningful action against infiltration from Bangladesh with communalism. Now the chickens are coming home to roost.
And it is not only in West Bengal and Assam that Islamization is growing but also in Kerala. With all its high social and education indices, the districts with high Muslim population are gradually becoming Shariat-compliant. But for the intervention of Subramanian Swamy, State Bank of India (SBI) Sharia Mutual Fund would have been launched in 2014. Swamy wrote a letter to the Prime Minister in December 2014, saying that Islamic banking would be “politically and economically disastrous for our country.”
Unfortunately, not many in our country are fighting gradual Islamization, which continues by various means—intimidation (Malda and Mumbai), financial innovations (Islamic banking and Shariat-compliant instruments), political correctness (the media refusing to properly report Islamist advances), etc. It is time politicians and opinion makers woke up to the menace of Islamization.
